Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Publicity campaigns

As a member of the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia the Council takes part in many road safety campaigns to help promote and encourage a safer road environment across the Borough.

These include support for the publicity campaigns run by the Department for Transport and those ran regionally by the Mercia Group of Road Safety Officers. These cover a wide range of topics and are aimed at increasing safety for all road users within Telford and Wrekin.

This page gives examples of some of the campaigns we support.

Don't Drink and Drive: 'The End' Campaign
The Don't Drink and Drive campaign is an on going event. Popular belief is that drinking and driving accidents only occur over the Christmas period. In fact, the Summer months have the worst record. We promote the attitude that if you are going to drive you should not drink, even one drink can effect your judgement.

In 2008 Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service produced a leaflet containing alcohol free cocktail recipes to be used as the basis for a Christmas drink drive campaign involving the Fire Service and the council.

School Gate Parking
Almost every school in the Borough has a problem with inconsiderate parking at the start and end of the day. The Road Safety Team holds campaigns such as "Walk to School Week", and provides leaflets/information to try to help schools overcome this problem.

Being Seen
We regularly promote the "Be Safe, Be Seen" message. This campaign runs each October when British Summer Time ends. We have a range of information leaflets and posters for schools including the Department for Transport "Hedgehog" posters.

Seatbelts and Child Restraints
Each year a number of children are injured as passengers because their parents have not encouraged them to use the correct restraint. In partnership with West Mercia Constabulary we run an annual campaign to raise awareness amongst both pupils and parents.

If you would like to run your own local road safety campaign or for help, advice and free resources, please contact the Road Safety Team.
